BLOG PROMPT: My Boyfriend Came Back from the War

PLEASE ANSWER BY POSTING COMMENTS.

After exploring the site "My Boyfriend Came Back from the War" made in 1996 by Olia Lialina, what do you think the piece is about? How does is challenge expectations about web design and linear narrative? Keep in mind this is a work for net art from the very early days of the web. Imagine how people might have felt seeing it at the time. Here is the URL:

  1. Wow..first of all, that was really amazing to me.
Thinking in terms of this website being made literally 20 years ago..I would imagine they were confused or they may have been trying to understand all of the animation and navigation.
I think the piece is about the things and questions that her boyfriend has went through during his time in war, maybe even questions that he asked her. I can definitely tell that the author was expressing the events and the things that she has experienced from her perspective. I just think it's a very creative way to express the way she is feeling.
I think it challenges expectations in those very days of the web because it was such a phenomenon in the way that it was executed. The narrative was very personable and it really got the message across to me. I enjoyed it honestly.

  2. To me, the sight seemed very abstract. Especially with the rather limited technology at play, it was very impressive technically. Though I think the effect is diminished by the pixelated photographs, it did have a very chaotic, confusing, almost frenetic effect. It has a very creative feel for me, but I feel as though I could have understood better, and more clearly, through another means, such as poetry.

  3. Before i get into talking about this site as in the sense of web design, I think it is important to think about where web design began and then where we are today and then compare it to where it is today. The first website was created in 1991 by a man named Tim Berners-Lee he created the website basically defining what the World Wide Web was. Looking at how this site is set up and Tim's first site with only being five years apart, the website is extremely advanced due to there only being a select few who could do this sort of thing and the resources available to make websites. Now if we compare to what we have today in terms of websites and art, I think that this website expresses the idea of minimalism. This is due to the websites use of negative space, movement and also its linear narrative. Thus to me i feel that this ebiste is like a work of art that makes you think about a lot of things, but yet leaves you with just that, thoughts.

  4. I think the piece is about a couple's difficulty restarting their lives when the boyfriend came back from the war. It's kind of hard to decipher exactly who says what, and in what order because of the bizarre non-linear navigation. I think it's important to consider this as kind of a precursor to the webpages of today, which are set up in a way that provide many choices to visitors, in the same way that visitors to this website have the choice between the different squares. Where you click determines what will happen next. As others have said, this was very advanced for the day, and it was probably incredibly confusing for early web users, and even for me.

  5. I think this piece was about the struggles of reconnecting with a loved one after they return from a war. Following the story was a tad difficult due to the vague dialogue that seemed to jump around a lot, but despite this the site is still very impressive considering the time it was made. The way they work with graphics and text that jump around the page is a unique way of storytelling, and contrasts with other earlier methods that usually involved a more linear and to-the-point narrative. This website not only challenges other sites with its interesting graphic style, but its also a very interactive story. I think this type of web design creates a lot more interest to the viewer than some other websites did around 1996.

I think the piece is about coping with all the feelings she had when her boyfriend was in the war. She wrote down all the questions she kept asking herself.

In my opinion it is a really good work because it is very interactive and engages the viewer. It is a great piece of Art, especially for the early days of the web.

When I saw this it first gave me an eerie feeling.
what do you think the piece is about?
I feel as though this piece was about depression of when he felt and all the emotions she went through. I continue to wonder what was she like before he left?
How does is challenge expectations about web design and linear narrative?
To me instead of the standard blog where you scrolled down and up on a page, you were more engaged with it because you had to keep clicking to go deeper into the blog. It's almost I clicking deeper inside her mind...

  8. So when I first saw the site I thought it had a Take on me music video look to it. Then as I continued in it made me feel like I was going through a choose your own adventure story by being allowed to reveal whatever in which order I wanted. But as I continued I picked up that it was about a couple following the female and how her partner went to war and as he returned he became distant and different. A soldiers life had changed him and she couldn't accept it, and wanted the old one back. I would have to say it challenges web art because it was a page made to tell a short story during the interaction the the viewer progressing it at their own pace and time
